Production Process
Spline shaft has mainly used the processing of hobbing, milling and grinding, or other plastic deformation methods, like a cold beating.
01 ) Hobbing process: Use a spline hob on the milling machine or gear hobbing machine to cut the splines, this method has high productivity and accuracy, and it’s suitable for mass production.
02) Milling process: Milling the profile of teeth directly with a special forming cutter on the universal milling machine. Milling teeth one by one with the dividing head, after completion of milling, use a Disc-milling cutter to trim the bottom diameter slightly. The milling method has low productivity and accuracy, it’s mainly used for single piece and small batch production, to determine the center by outer diameter, or for rough machining before quenching.
(If you don’t use a forming milling cutter, you can also use two disc-milling cutters at the same time to milling both sides of the spline).
03) Grinding process: Use the formed grinding wheel to grind the side and bottom diameter of spline teeth on the grinding machine, suitable for machining hardened spline shaft or the spline shaft with the higher precision requirement, especially for the spline shaft needs to be determined the center by inner diameter.
04) Cold beating process: Produce with the special machines, two beating heads distribute around the workpiece symmetrically. With the workpiece’s indexing rotary motion and a constant ratio of axial high-speed rotation, once the workpiece rotates 1 tooth, the formed beating wheel will hammer the tooth groove 1 time. Based on the continuously hammering under a high speed and high energy movement of the beating wheel, the Splines will be formed by plastic deformation on the surface of the workpiece.
The precision of the cold beating process is between milling and grinding, and the efficiency is about 5 times higher than milling. The cold beating process can also improve the utilization of materials.
